Had this trash can since Christmas with no problems. It does sit next to a doorway and sometimes opens when you walk by too close. Still on the first set of batteries. Nice finish and appearance.
But the batteries were too heavy and they became loose and pushed the cover down into the can. So the trash can is totally useless. I could no way close the battery cover. Sometime after that I realized it stopped working, and found that the cover was permanently lost (to the town dump). What a trash product it is. This apparently happened when I emptied the can for the first time. the tape could no longer hold the heavy weight of 4 D-batteries, and became loose.
But unfortunately I bought it through amazon.com (I had also threw away the box). So I duck-taped it to hold the baerries. Had I bought this from Costco, I would take it to the store and they would refund me. (I ordered this on 1/14/2010). I duck-taped the batteries directly into the slot, but after a few hours (maybe a few minutes). I'll just have to throw this trash can into my trash bin to go to the town trash tump. If amazon.com keeps selling products like this it will become a trash company as well.
I think they just packed the wrong one in my package, and I was too lazy to do anything about it. Overall, this trash can works very well, and is stylish enough (though I assume the ones that cost 2-3 times what this one costs look much nicer). My only problem with it is that the ring that sits between the base and the lid doesn't fit the can, and looks asif it's it was made for a smaller model. In any case, it works fine without the ring, but the lid has to sit directly on the trash bag. No big deal.
I purchased this trash can at least 5 years ago, maybe longer. Recenly I bought 2 of them for my daughter's kitchen. I originally bought one for my kitchen and then bought another one for my office. I have never had any problems with them. She uses one for trash and the other recycling. Her young son thinks they are magic.
This is a wonderful automated trash can. I have had absolutely no problems with it. I would highly recommend it for anyone in need of a trash can.
